The Color of Your Heart

April 13, 2005

We were pleased to have our Clerk of Court for the City of New Orleans with us this past Sunday. In keeping with our theme of Diversity, we had many guests in addition to Kimberly who added a great deal to the mix. What a great service it was as we worshipped God in vibrant and colorful community.

The Church is to be a reflection of the creative hand of God. God, in his artistic brilliance, has chosen to make a people of many colors, sizes and shapes. Our aim ought to be in keeping with His clear agenda. Historically, the Sunday morning worship hour has been called the "most segregated hour in American culture". This ought not be. Our intention as a church at Uptown Church is to strive for all we ought to be, can be, and all that God has called us to be. Part of that calling is to reflect the worship that will take place in the heavens on "that great day" when people from every nation, every tribe, and every tongue will bow down and honor Him as Lord and God. In keeping with our desire to seek and promote diversity we offer the following poem from Mrs. Butler which was read on Sunday. Read on!

The Color of Your Heart

By Kimberly Williamson Butler

What’s the color of your heart?

Is it black and blue and bruised?

Have the cares and trials of life

Left you feeling somewhat used?

What’s the color of your heart?

Is it red with anger – vengeance, lust and strife?

Have you ever wondered

That there must be more to life?

What’s the color of your heart?

Is it gray from lies – deception and deceit?

Does your smile conceal the truth

Can we trust the words you speak?

What’s the color of your heart?

Is it black in misery – filled with bitterness and despair?

Do you doubt your dreams of life

Have you lost the will to care?

What’s the color of your heart?

Is it green with envy – jealousy and greed?

Has the Word of God you’ve heard

Ever taken seed?

What’s the color of your heart?

Is it blue from loneliness – and grief from those not true?

Are you longing for that someone

Who loves you just for you?

What’s the color of your heart?

It’s not written on your skin

Not the darkest dark nor whitest white

Can mask a heart of sin

It takes the blood of Jesus

To wash away the pain

And to find true peace and joy and love

In Him you must remain

For with the blood of Jesus

Your heart is clean and new

His love will comfort and protect

And joy will dwell there too!

Daily seek the purity

Of a heart as white as snow

For then and only then will peace

Become the life you know.
